La leyenda de tlacuache - cuento en inglés
La leyenda del tlacuache (también conocido como zarigüeya) es una de las muchas historias tradicionales que forman parte del folclore de diversas culturas indígenas de México y América Central conjuntamente con la Leyenda del nopal. Esta leyenda tiene varias versiones dependiendo de la región, pero una de las más comunes es la que explica cómo el tlacuache trajo el fuego a los seres humanos.
Esta leyenda es un hermoso ejemplo de cómo los animales, a menudo considerados astutos y valientes en el folclore, juegan un papel fundamental en la vida y el bienestar de los seres humanos. La historia del tlacuache y el fuego no sólo explica un fenómeno natural (la cola sin pelo del tlacuache) sino que también transmite valores de valentía, ingenio y altruismo.
La leyenda de tlacuache en inglés (The legend of Opossum)
A long time ago, when the world was young, humans did not have fire. They were cold at night and could not cook their food. Only the gods had fire, and they kept it carefully guarded.
One day, a brave and clever tlacuache (opossum) decided that he had to help the humans. He approached the place where the gods kept the fire, in the heart of a mountain. Using his cunning, the tlacuache managed to enter without being seen.
The tlacuache knew that if he took the fire, the gods would be angry. But he couldn't let the humans suffer any longer. So, very carefully, he took a burning ember and hid it in his furry tail. Then, quickly, he escaped from the mountain and ran towards the humans.
When he reached the village, the tlacuache gave the ember to the humans. With it, they were able to light fires, warm themselves, and cook their food. The humans were very grateful to the tlacuache and considered him a hero.
Since then, tlacuaches have had the tip of their tail without hair, as a reminder of the brave act of the tlacuache who brought fire to humanity. And so, thanks to the cleverness and bravery of the tlacuache, humans never felt cold again.
La leyenda de tlacuache en español
Hace mucho tiempo, cuando el mundo era joven, los humanos no tenían fuego. Pasaban frío por las noches y no podían cocinar su comida. Sólo los dioses tenían el fuego, y lo mantenían celosamente guardado.
Un día, un valiente y astuto tlacuache decidió que debía ayudar a los humanos. Se acercó al lugar donde los dioses guardaban el fuego, en el corazón de una montaña. Utilizando su ingenio, el tlacuache logró entrar sin ser visto.
El tlacuache sabía que si tomaba el fuego, los dioses se enojarían. Pero no podía dejar que los humanos sufrieran más. Así que, con mucho cuidado, tomó una brasa ardiente y la escondió en su cola peluda. Luego, rápidamente, escapó de la montaña y corrió hacia los humanos.
Cuando llegó al pueblo, el tlacuache entregó la brasa a los humanos. Con ella, pudieron encender fogatas, calentarse y cocinar sus alimentos. Los humanos estaban muy agradecidos con el tlacuache y lo consideraron un héroe.
Desde entonces, los tlacuaches tienen la punta de la cola sin pelo, como recuerdo del valiente acto de aquel tlacuache que trajo el fuego a la humanidad. Y así, gracias al ingenio y valentía del tlacuache, los humanos nunca más pasaron frío.
